In Training
So often, and usually when I don’t expect it, I hear girls talking about how they’d love to learn to pole dance. It kind of makes me sad and excited and happy all at once: I’m sad because I am thinking Well, just get to it! Oh dear, maybe you never will and I’m excited and happy because it makes me wonder how much fun they are about to have if they do dare to take the plunge.
Because I can tell you, it is FUN. I love doing it, and if you give it a go I know you’ll love it too!
My first lesson…it went something like this…
I had no idea what I was in for. I’d replied to an ad in the paper, spoken to a woman named Barbara, and now here I was standing outside her door ringing her bell.
I was getting there. It was all starting to make sense
When it opened I got the shock of my life. Here was an enormous woman standing before me in next to nothing. Not fat, exactly; weirdly she was both large and toned. She welcomed me in with a massive hug and the place smelt of perfume. Everything inside the house was sparkly and gorgeous.
“You just be Sarah,” she said, “I know you made the right choice coming here today!”
It freaked me out a bit but her laugh was so infectious that I couldn’t do anything but smile and say, “Well, I think you may be right.”
Ten minutes later I had sore legs and all I could think was: we must look like a couple of slappers
It didn’t last, though, because soon I was absolutely loving it. Barbara showed me all kinds of amazing moves on her living room pole and I even started to get the hang of it. I was nowhere near as good as her, of course, but I was getting there. It was all starting to make sense in some strange kind of a way.
Then the lesson was over and I was putting my clothes on and leaving. It felt like a sad time, but it wasn’t that sad: we arranged a lesson the following week and it was just as much fun, if not more!
Now I have as much experience – maybe more – than Barbara and this, all this fun, is my job and I love it.
I’m so glad I replied to that ad that day.
